FBI Director Kash Patel has highlighted Ghana's contribution to a global operation targeting scam centers, according to his statement on X. This follows a dispute over the initial account of the operation, known as Operation Blackout. Mr. Patel stated that the FBI's global campaign against scam center fraud is yielding results in Ghana, citing seizures and arrests as part of the international effort. He mentioned that the broader operation has led to approximately $17 billion in seizures, hundreds of alleged scammer arrests, and the freeing of thousands of trafficked individuals. Additionally, over 10,000 Americans were warned, preventing an estimated $670 million in potential losses. This statement comes after the FBI announced over 130 arrests in Ghana related to scam centers allegedly defrauding victims, including U.S. citizens. Ghana's Cyber Security Authority had previously stated that the operation, called Operation Cyber Hunt, was led and coordinated by Ghanaian authorities with support from various local and international agencies. The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation also questioned the initial portrayal of Ghana's role.
