A Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer has died and a colleague is in critical condition after a motor tricycle suspected of carrying dynamite exploded at Hamile in the Upper West Region on Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
Security sources in Hamile said the tricycle was travelling along an unapproved route near the border with Burkina Faso when its occupants allegedly ignored instructions to stop at a checkpoint.
Officers gave chase, and the suspected explosives on the tricycle detonated during the pursuit, catching the pursuing personnel in the blast. One officer died at the scene.
The civilians on the tricycle, who were allegedly transporting the suspected dynamite, were also reported killed. Their identities have not been released.
The extent of the surviving officer's injuries and the facility where he is being treated have not been disclosed. Residents later gathered at the GIS checkpoint to demand the withdrawal of immigration personnel from the town, and military personnel were deployed to the area.
The GIS has not issued a public statement on the incident. It is not known where the suspected explosives were headed.
