The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that a crash involving police vehicles at Ridge in Accra on Wednesday knocked down a civilian motorcyclist, but has denied that the rider was abandoned at the scene.

According to Graphic Online, the police's Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team responded to a Facebook post by journalist Umaru Sanda Amadu, who wrote that police vehicles driving against oncoming traffic hit a motorbike and that officers did not take the injured rider to hospital.

The police said the incident involved SV No. 115 and another vehicle from the National Protection Unit (NPU), whose officers were on what was described as an important assignment.

"Preliminary enquiries indicate that the assigned service driver quickly conveyed the victim to Ridge Hospital for medical attention," the police said, adding that the rider was treated and discharged.

Police said the victim indicated that the officers involved paid all his medical bills and that he was recovering at home.

The police said the case was under investigation to establish the circumstances of the accident and whether further action was required. The rider has not been named.
