Officials from the Ministry of Health appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) regarding the failure of 596 staff to repay car loans totaling approximately GH¢10 million, with GH¢8 million still outstanding. According to Ranking Member of PAC, Samuel Atta Mills, the situation constitutes "organised crime." Ministry officials stated that some beneficiaries cancelled their standing orders for loan repayments, attributing the challenges to weak internal controls. Mr. Atta Mills rejected this explanation, accusing the Ministry of attempting to shift blame. He urged the Ministry to establish a dedicated recovery unit to retrieve vehicles from defaulting staff, suggesting that those who obtained the cars fraudulently should have them repossessed. Mr. Atta Mills criticized the Ministry for not taking responsibility for the scheme's shortcomings.
