The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has alerted customers across the country to a rise in fraudulent activities. Scammers are posing as ECG staff or agents to sell fake electricity meters and demand payments through personal mobile money accounts, according to the ECG. Customers are advised not to send money to private mobile money numbers for electricity services. The ECG General Manager for External Communications, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, stated that the company operates a completely cashless payment system. All payments should be made through official channels such as the ECG Power App or the shortcode *226#. Dr Ayiku explained that some individuals offer to supply and install new meters for a fee, advertising them on social media platforms. These meters may be unregistered and could be treated as illegal connections by the ECG. He emphasized that the ECG does not sell meters through individuals. Customers seeking new meters or electricity services should use official ECG district offices or the ECG Power App and pay only approved fees through the company’s official platforms. Another scam involves phone calls from individuals claiming to be ECG staff, informing customers that their meter is ready and providing a personal mobile money number for payment. Dr Ayiku stressed that ECG staff do not request payments into personal mobile money wallets and urged customers to treat such calls as fraud attempts. He advised customers to verify any request purportedly from ECG before making payments and to report any suspicious activity.
