The Supreme Court has granted the Police Administration 10 days to file its statement of case in its appeal against a Court of Appeal decision ordering the promotion of 40 police Chief Inspectors.

According to Modern Ghana, the Chief Inspectors were excluded from a special amnesty promotion exercise in 2021, while their juniors were promoted. The exercise invited personnel from Corporal to Chief Inspector who had obtained university degrees by 2020 to apply for special promotion.

On 22 January 2026, the Court of Appeal ordered the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Management Board to promote the officers within six months. The Police Administration appealed, and at an earlier sitting the Supreme Court stayed execution of that judgment pending the appeal.

The court explained that promotions could not be reversed if they were carried out and the Police Administration later won the appeal, but said the officers could still be promoted even if they had retired by the time the case is decided.

A lawyer for the officers, Henry Ohemeng Kumi, told the court, presided over by Justice Anthony Forson Jr, that delays by the Police Administration should not work against his clients, citing the cost of travelling to attend proceedings.

The appeal remains pending before the Supreme Court.
