Galamsey was the most negatively discussed issue in Ghana's online political conversations in September, according to an analysis by IMANI Africa. Illegal mining recorded 2,647 mentions and a sentiment score of -0.72. Narcotics and economic concerns were also among the major issues driving negative online discussions. The analysis examined online political conversations between September 1 and 30, drawing data from X, Facebook, TikTok and other digital and media sources. Galamsey remained consistently prominent throughout the month, with its mentions increasing. Narcotics-related issues were another major source of negative sentiment, with cocaine generating 1,344 mentions and a score of -0.48. Economic issues also featured heavily, with currency-related discussions generating 1,361 mentions, while fuel and energy recorded 1,135. The cost of living recorded a negative sentiment score of -0.25. IMANI Africa noted that its findings are based on a targeted sample of online conversations and should not be interpreted as a direct measure of national public opinion.
