The former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Mr Solomon Asamoah, has filed two applications at the Supreme Court seeking to halt criminal proceedings against him at the High Court in Accra. These applications aim to quash the processes of the trial court and stop the ongoing proceedings over an alleged $2 million financial loss to the state. At the High Court, counsel for Mr Asamoah requested an adjournment to allow the Supreme Court to hear and determine the applications. The Principal State Attorney opposed this, but the High Court judge adjourned the case to October 19, pending the Supreme Court's decision. Mr Asamoah and former GIIF Board Chairman, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, are facing charges including conspiracy to commit crime, intentional dissipation of public funds, and wilfully causing financial loss to the Republic. The prosecution alleges they approved and paid $2 million to a South African company for the SkyTrain project without requisite board approval. The prosecution has called three witnesses, and the High Court had previously dismissed the accused persons' submissions of no case, directing them to file their defences, which they failed to do. Counsel for the accused maintain the prosecution has not established a prima facie case.
