Former New Patriotic Party Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, and Wontumi Farms have initiated legal action at the High Court. They are seeking a declaration that the criminal case stemming from a Ghana Exim Bank loan dispute is a civil matter. The suit, filed against Ghana Exim Bank, EOCO, and the Attorney General, follows criminal charges including alleged defrauding by false pretences, uttering a forged document, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The plaintiffs contend that the issue is a civil debt improperly framed as a criminal case, with EOCO allegedly overstepping its mandate. They are requesting the court to order Ghana Exim Bank to account for the outstanding loan amount, which they state should be repaid according to the loan agreement. The plaintiffs argue the loan was legitimately obtained for a farming project, with land mortgaged as security and a personal guarantee provided. They claim the farming project failed due to unforeseen circumstances, and the bank was informed and allegedly promised to activate insurance to cover the loan. The plaintiffs maintain there was no deceit or criminal conduct and seek the matter to be remitted to civil courts for resolution.
