National Petroleum Authority chief executive Godwin Edudzi Tameklo has warned that anyone who collects spilled fuel from a tanker accident scene is a thief and can face up to 20 years in prison if caught.

He spoke during the NPA Consumer Week 2026 celebration in Kasoa, renewing the Stay Back, Stay Safe campaign launched earlier in 2026.

He said people who rush to overturned tankers with containers risk fire, explosions, injury and death, and that no amount of fuel is worth a life.

The public should stay clear, alert the Ghana National Fire Service and the police, and leave the scene to trained emergency crews, he said.
