A significant portion of traffic lights on the busy Asokwa-Aputuogya Road in Kumasi are not working, turning the stretch into a hazard, according to MyJoy News. An assessment revealed that only 14 out of 95 traffic lights at eight major intersections are operational, leaving over 85% non-functional. This situation has been ongoing for nearly a year, despite complaints. At critical junctions, all traffic lights are non-operational, with some damaged poles collapsed on the ground. The malfunctioning lights have led to a free-for-all situation, increasing the risk of crashes and pedestrian knockdowns. Authorities are aware of the danger, with inspections conducted previously, but the lights remain unrepaired. The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly stated the delay is because the road has not been officially handed over by the contractor. Data indicates a significant number of crashes occur at intersections, with 20 fatal incidents recorded in 2024. The National Road Safety Authority has confirmed the issue and submitted a report to the Department of Urban Roads, stating that authorities responsible for ensuring the lights are operational should be blamed for any resulting casualties.
