Cocoa farmers in seven towns across the Ashanti Region engaged with Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) officials this month. The meetings, held in locations including Offinso and New Edubiase, aimed to explain the new Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 2026 (Act 1182), and address farmer questions about the current season's producer price. According to MyJoyOnline, while farmers had anticipated a higher price, the explanations provided by COCOBOD officials helped them understand the factors influencing the decision. Farmers also raised concerns regarding the distribution of free fertiliser, the rollout of a proposed Farmer Pension Scheme, and transparency in the cocoa scholarship scheme. They welcomed provisions in Act 1182 that protect cocoa farmlands from illegal mining, known as galamsey, and unauthorised sand winning. COCOBOD officials stated that the concerns raised would be forwarded for consideration, and further sessions are planned to discuss input distribution and pest control programmes. These engagements are part of a broader national programme to connect COCOBOD policies with farmers across other cocoa-growing regions.
