The government spent GH¢49.72 million to evacuate 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa following a resurgence of xenophobic attacks, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The evacuation exercise, which ran from May 27 to September 4, was conducted to protect Ghanaians amid growing threats and violence against foreign nationals. The expenditure covered chartered flights, tickets, ground transportation, feeding, accommodation, medical care, reintegration support, and the repatriation of the remains of two deceased Ghanaians. Each returnee received GH¢5,000 as a reintegration grant and GH¢500 as a travel allowance, along with other assistance. Four Ghanaians died in connection with the violence, and the government has engaged South African authorities to pursue justice for those responsible. Ghana has also petitioned the African Union Commission to address xenophobic attacks against African nationals. The names of evacuees and relevant documents have been published, and the Auditor-General has been invited to audit evacuation exercises since 2017.
