The Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has called on Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi to retract comments she says could be interpreted as encouraging small-scale miners to operate without the required licences and permits.
According to Awula Serwah, Sammy Gyamfi's remarks are irresponsible and could undermine efforts to combat illegal mining. She stressed that a mining licence is a legal requirement, not merely an administrative inconvenience, and helps establish where mining activities can lawfully take place.
Awula Serwah also warned that irresponsible mining threatens the livelihoods of peasant farmers, with more than 2.5 million at risk of losing their livelihoods. She called for compensation for farmers whose lands have been wrongly taken over by mining activities and urged authorities to ensure mining operations comply with the law. According to Citi Newsroom.
