United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has accused a Malian national who was deported through Ghana of making false statements in an asylum application.
According to Chale News, which cited GhanaWeb, ICE made the allegation against Moussa Diawara following public discussion of his immigration case.
Diawara previously appeared in a report by the American television programme 60 Minutes concerning deportations and the use of Ghana as a transit country.
The programme reported that Diawara had lived in the United States for 25 years before immigration authorities detained and deported him.
ICE subsequently disputed aspects of his asylum application and accused him of immigration fraud.
The allegation remains an accusation by the US agency. The report does not establish that Diawara has been formally charged with fraud or convicted of any offence.
No further court hearing or enforcement action was confirmed. The case also concerns Ghana's involvement in receiving deportees who are nationals of other countries.
