The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is set to create an Anti-Fraud and Illegal Payments Directorate to detect and stop healthcare providers from levying unauthorized out-of-pocket charges under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This new directorate aims to enhance the NHIA's ability to identify fraudulent activities, monitor illegal fees, and address claim leakages that could jeopardize the health insurance program's sustainability. According to the NHIA's Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations, Dr. Kwesi Djokoto, the Authority is also requesting Parliament to prioritize amendments to the National Health Insurance Authority Act, 2012 (Act 852). These amendments would strengthen sanctions against entities and individuals involved in fraud and illegal payments within the scheme. Dr. Djokoto emphasized that technological advancements in claims processing and payments need to be supported by robust legislation and enforcement to deter misconduct and ensure compliance.
