The Lands Commission has issued a warning to prospective land buyers, advising them to conduct thorough due diligence before purchasing property. This advice aims to prevent individuals from becoming victims of land fraud and ownership disputes. According to the Commission, some people illegally sell state-owned or vested lands to unsuspecting buyers, leading to financial losses and prolonged legal battles for purchasers. Surveyor Raphael Hokey, Acting Deputy Executive Secretary in charge of Operations, emphasized the importance of verifying land ownership and legal status before making payments or engaging in transactions. He stated that essential steps include conducting searches at the Lands Commission, physically inspecting the property, and consulting relevant individuals to confirm ownership. Hokey cautioned that neglecting these checks could result in dealing with individuals who lack the legal right to sell land, especially when the property belongs to the state.
