Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has revealed that a senior airport security officer allegedly exploited his position to help a drug trafficker bypass security screening at Ghana's airport, according to Adom Online.
The officer used a staff entrance to avoid usual screening procedures and handed over a bag to another individual suspected of being involved in drug trafficking. The incident has prompted authorities to strengthen security measures, including deploying canine units from the police and military to support the Narcotics Control Commission.
The government is introducing additional checks to address weaknesses in the existing screening system and prevent individuals from using alternative routes to smuggle narcotics. The minister said the incident highlighted the need to strengthen security checks beyond conventional screening systems used at the airport.
Authorities will deploy canine units before passengers check in and again before they board their flights to ensure that any drugs that might have evaded earlier checks can still be detected before a passenger boards an aircraft.
