According to the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, a senior security officer at the airport allegedly exploited his position to bypass standard screening protocols. Speaking before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, the minister stated that the officer used a staff entrance to avoid security checks and subsequently handed a bag to an individual suspected of involvement in drug trafficking. In response to this incident, the government is implementing enhanced security measures, including the deployment of canine units from the police and military to assist the Narcotics Control Commission. These units will conduct screenings at multiple stages of the departure process to identify illicit substances. The minister noted that these additional checks may increase passenger processing times by 15 to 30 minutes. Furthermore, the minister stated that Ghana is pursuing mutual legal assistance with French authorities and has signed memoranda of understanding with the Netherlands and the United Kingdom to improve intelligence-sharing regarding international drug trafficking.
