Ghana's Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, stated that requesting rent advance payments for more than six months is against the law.
He issued a strong warning to landlords that his office will pursue those who violate this rule.
The Commissioner also announced a new Rent Card system will start on March 1. This system will require both landlords and tenants to register for a card.
This initiative is based on Section 20 of the Rent Act, which was updated under PNDC Law 138.
The Rent Card aims to regulate rent payments and ensure compliance with the law.
Mr. Opoku emphasized that strict measures will be put in place to enforce the six-month limit on rent advances.
Landlords found guilty of demanding more than six months' rent in advance will face legal consequences.
The Commissioner encouraged tenants to report any landlords who violate these regulations.
