The Asante Akropong District Court has sentenced Gideon Owusu, a 24-year-old driver's mate, to 18 months in prison for unlawful damage, attempt to commit crime and stealing at Abuakwa near Akropong in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reports.

Owusu pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea. The court was presided over by Mr Emmanuel Wiafe Adu. Police Detective Chief Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu prosecuted.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Adams Mohammed, is the manager of Chemico Limited and resides in Sunyani. Owusu resided at Abuakwa-Asenemaso.

On 9 October 2026 at about 10:50pm, the complainant was driving a Mitsubishi pickup with registration number GE 2257-16 from Kumasi to Sunyani when he detected a fault near Abuakwa-Asenemaso. He parked and locked the vehicle and lodged in a nearby hotel, the prosecutor said.

At about 0230 hours the next morning, Ashanti Regional SWAT officers on night patrol, Chief Inspector Justice Agyekum Asiamah and Chief Inspector Emmanuel Boah, found that Owusu had broken the back door window of the pickup and removed a car tape valued at GH¢4,500. He was still in the vehicle and claimed he had gone there to sleep, according to GNA. He was arrested and handed over to the Abuakwa police at about 0700 hours.

In a caution statement, Owusu admitted damaging the windscreen, valued at GH¢7,000, and stealing the car tape. He was charged and brought before the court.
