Mr. Atta Akyea stated on Eyewitness News that he did not formally approach President John Dramani Mahama for clemency for his client. However, he indicated that he had anticipated the President might consider granting a pardon, given the widespread nature of illegal mining in the country. He suggested that the President could take into account the scale of galamsey and the involvement of influential individuals when considering such cases. Mr. Atta Akyea expressed his belief that the President might be reluctant to impose a lengthy prison sentence in a galamsey-related matter. President Mahama had previously granted pardons to 863 convicted individuals under Article 72(1) of the Constitution, announced as part of Ghana's Independence Anniversary activities.
