Samuel Owusu Brako, the DCE for Achiase in the Eastern Region, has confirmed rejecting three letters from the Minerals Commission that proposed mining prospecting activities by different companies, according to the Ghanaian Times. Brako stated that this decision was made in collaboration with traditional authorities who support his vision of making Achiase a galamsey-free district. He explained to Parliament's Local Government and Rural Development Committee that legitimate prospecting could create opportunities for illegal miners to establish a presence. Brako linked the decision to concerns about the district's potable water supply, noting that mining activity could worsen existing water access problems. The Assembly has initiated projects for 15 mechanised boreholes, in addition to 10 previously built. The presence of the Achiase Military Barracks also aids in anti-galamsey operations, according to the DCE. A committee member praised the Assembly's stance against galamsey.
