Police have arrested a hunter after a man was shot dead in the Nyagbo Kume Forest in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reports.
The deceased, identified as Mr Zebio from Nyagbo Konda, was reportedly picking mushrooms in the forest on Wednesday when a hunter allegedly mistook him for game and shot him. Sources told GNA that he died on the spot from gunshot wounds.
The Assembly member for the area, Mr Theophilus Doh, confirmed the incident to GNA in a telephone interview. He said he received a call from a constituent about the shooting at around 04:45.
Police confirmed the arrest of the hunter and said investigations have begun to establish the circumstances of the shooting. The body has been retrieved and deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Residents told GNA that locals often visit the forest to pick wild mushrooms, snails and other forest products. Police cautioned hunters to take extreme care and follow hunting safety rules to prevent similar incidents.
The hunter has not been named and has not been charged.
