Automated spot fines for 49 road traffic offences will take effect on 1 November 2026, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service says.

According to Adom Online, ACP Alexander Obeng, the MTTD's Director of Research, Education and Planning, said in an interview on Asempa FM that motorists who commit those offences, including speeding, would be penalised without necessarily being arrested and taken to court.

He said the MTTD had installed equipment, software, cameras and a back-office system to monitor motorists, particularly in areas prone to speeding, and had tested the system for about a year. The system was developed in collaboration with the road transport union.

Under the system, liability for an offence detected by camera would initially be linked to the registered owner of the vehicle. The motorist would be given evidence of the alleged offence and 14 days to pay the penalty or contest the notice through the same online portal.

ACP Obeng also reminded drivers of the speed limits: 50km/h in built-up areas, 30km/h around markets and other busy places, 90km/h outside built-up areas and 100km/h on motorways.

He said the MTTD began enforcing aspects of the measures on 10 September 2026 and that reported road accidents fell from 1,108 in September last year to 1,003 in September 2026, a drop of about 9.5 per cent.

The police did not publish the full list of the 49 offences in the reports.
