Fire is the leading risk threatening informal-sector businesses in Ghana, according to a nationwide survey by the National Insurance Commission (NIC). The NIC-YEA Insurance Awareness and Risk Perception Report found that 41% of respondents cited fire as their main business risk, while theft and robbery were reported by 36% and illness by 34%. The survey, which collected responses from 26,493 individuals across ten regions between January and March 2026, indicated that market traders are willing to pay a median of GH¢25 per week for insurance. Drivers were willing to pay GH¢30, artisans GH¢20, and store owners and youth entrepreneurs GH¢15. Nationally, the median willingness to pay was GH¢20 weekly. The NIC report recommends a three-tier pricing structure for insurance products, ranging from GH¢10-15 for entry-level cover to GH¢40-60 for comprehensive options. The findings suggest that insurers need to develop affordable products with simplified claims procedures and digital policy issuance to increase insurance uptake among informal businesses.
