The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested a number of suspected illegal miners at Subin Akwaaboso in the Central Region.
In a statement issued on 2 November 2026, NAIMOS said the enforcement operation took place on the afternoon of Sunday, 1 November.
It said its personnel and members of the Special Boat Squadron faced considerable resistance from a group, some of whom were wielding cutlasses, firearms and other offensive weapons, putting personnel and others at risk.
NAIMOS said obstruction of lawful enforcement was a serious concern and that people suspected of attacking personnel or obstructing operations would be referred to the relevant authorities.
The Secretariat said it would continue to act within the law, using restraint and proportionate measures to protect personnel, accompanying journalists and the public. It urged community leaders and residents to raise concerns through appropriate channels.
The number of people arrested and their identities were not given, and no charges have been reported. They remain presumed innocent.
