Some residents of Jema-Asemkrom allege they have faced intimidation and death threats after helping authorities fight illegal mining on the Tano River.

According to MyJoyOnline, the residents say the threats have come from traditional leaders and other community members whom they claim are involved in the illegal mining.

A recent visit by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) task force found that illegal mining on the river has continued despite repeated enforcement operations and the secretariat's presence in the area.

The task force fears a lack of cooperation from residents could compromise its operations, the report said.

The report does not name the people accused or say whether the threats have been reported to police. The allegations have not been verified, and those accused have not been charged.
