Two people have been killed and 13 others, including a police officer, injured in violent clashes that erupted during the celebration of the Nchiraa Yam Festival in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region on Saturday. According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m., shortly after the festival had ended. Preliminary investigations indicated that the disturbances began when the Chief of Nchiraa and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the chief’s palace. Two people died in the ensuing confusion, while 13 others sustained gunshot wounds and were receiving treatment at a hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation. No arrests have been made so far, but intensified patrols have been deployed in Nchiraa to prevent possible reprisal attacks.
