The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has announced that drivers who exceed prescribed speed limits will incur progressively higher fines through the TRAFFITECH-GH system. According to the Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, the system will impose penalties based on how much a motorist exceeds the legal speed limit. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, ACP Obeng stated that drivers will be fined 20 penalty units for every five kilometres per hour over the limit. One penalty unit is equivalent to GH¢12, meaning exceeding the limit by 5km/h will result in a GH¢240 fine. This measure is intended to deter speeding, a significant contributor to road crashes and fatalities in Ghana. The enforcement is based on existing road traffic regulations. The TRAFFITECH-GH system, which uses technology to enforce traffic laws, was initially planned for September 29 but has been postponed to November 1 for further public education and engagement.
