The Ghana Prisons Service says it has launched an investigation into claims that inmates attempted to poison former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on 28 October 2026, the Service's spokesperson, Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu, said the matter came to its attention through Wontumi's aide, according to Citi Newsroom.
He said the findings would be made public and that Wontumi was in good condition.
The Ghana Report quoted the spokesperson as saying the claim did not come as a direct complaint from Wontumi. He said he could not confirm reports that five inmates had been moved to another cell.
The claim was first made by Wontumi's aide, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah. It has not been independently verified.
Wontumi is serving a 20-year sentence linked to mining activity on his Samreboi concession.
