The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has urged miners in the Amenfi constituencies of the Western Region to adopt responsible and sustainable mining practices to protect water bodies, forests and land.

According to Adom Online, the NAIMOS Director of Operations, Colonel Kwame Sam Appiah, made the call at a meeting with traditional leaders and miners in Amenfi West. The meeting was intended to build cooperation and find practical ways to promote responsible mining and deal with the damage caused by illegal mining.

Colonel Appiah listened to the miners' concerns and urged them to work within the law and use methods that protect the environment. He assured them that the government is committed to helping them through the process of obtaining the licences they need to mine legally. Some miners asked NAIMOS to work more closely with them and guide them through the regulatory process.

At the same meeting, an Amenfi traditional leader, Nana Akwasi Addae, said chiefs and elders are blamed for galamsey even though illegal miners give them nothing, Adom Online reported. He said some farmers sell land to illegal miners without the knowledge or consent of traditional leaders, and asked the government to work more closely with traditional authorities.

NAIMOS announced on 29 October 2026 that it had begun community engagements in areas affected by illegal mining, saying they would complement, not replace, its enforcement operations.

No arrests or enforcement action were reported in connection with the Amenfi West meeting.
