The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is committing approximately GH¢35 million to a reclamation and reforestation project aimed at restoring forest land damaged by illegal mining at the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve, located near Samreboi in the Western Region. This initiative, undertaken in partnership with the Ghana Armed Forces and the Forestry Commission, will initially focus on 50 hectares, with plans to rehabilitate a total of about 200 hectares of degraded land within the reserve. The project is part of GoldBod’s National Reclamation and Environmental Restoration Programme and its Environmental, Social and Governance commitments. Military engineers are nearing the completion of civil engineering works in Compartment 161 of the reserve. According to a GoldBod field report, engineers have filled 192.4 hectares of land destroyed between 2021 and 2024. The budget allocates GH¢27.9 million for civil engineering works and GH¢7.2 million for afforestation over a decade. The Forestry Commission has appealed for support from corporate institutions and development partners for similar initiatives.
