Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a Minority Spokesperson on Parliament's Economy and Development Committee, asked the government to act quickly. He called for a bailout for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). He warned that Ghana's cocoa industry is in trouble.
Mr. Nkrumah stated that the problem is due to unpaid debts. He explained that COCOBOD needs funds to meet its payment obligations. He emphasized the importance of saving the cocoa sector.
Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) have bought cocoa worth around GH¢10 billion. This has happened since November 2025. These companies are waiting for payments for their purchases.
The unpaid debts are causing difficulties for the LBCs. This situation affects the entire cocoa value chain. Farmers are also impacted by these delays.
The Spokesperson highlighted the risk to the country's cocoa production. He stressed that a bailout is necessary to prevent further collapse. The cocoa sector is vital to Ghana's economy.
