Ghana's Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced a new directive regarding cooking oil transit. The minister stated that cooking oil can no longer be transported through land borders.
All cooking oil consignments are now required to enter and leave Ghana only through the country's seaports. This new rule takes effect immediately.
This policy change comes after authorities intercepted 18 articulated trucks. These trucks were suspected of being involved in a scheme to divert goods meant for transit.
Officials believe the diversion scheme involved cooking oil that was supposed to pass through Ghana to other countries. Instead, it was allegedly being sold within Ghana without proper duties.
The government aims to stop such illegal activities. Ensuring all transit goods follow the correct routes is part of this effort.
The ban is a measure to tighten controls on the movement of goods across Ghana's borders. It targets potential revenue loss from smuggled or diverted products.
