Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a spokesperson for an economic committee in Parliament, said COCOBOD needs urgent financial help. He warned that the cocoa industry in Ghana is at risk. He stated that COCOBOD has not paid its debts to Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs).
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said that since November 2025, LBCs have bought cocoa beans worth about GH¢10 billion. He explained that COCOBOD has not been able to pay these companies. This lack of payment is causing problems for the companies.
The unpaid debts are making it hard for LBCs to continue their business. This could lead to a halt in the cocoa buying process. The spokesperson asked the government to act immediately.
He emphasized that a bailout is necessary for COCOBOD to meet its financial duties. If COCOBOD cannot pay, the entire cocoa supply chain could suffer. The cocoa industry is important for Ghana's economy.
The lawmaker highlighted the widespread impact of this issue. Many farmers and workers depend on the cocoa sector. He urged the government to prevent further damage to Ghana's cocoa industry.
