A security expert is calling for stricter rules for fishermen. Dr Victor Doke believes fishermen should face penalties if they go beyond the marked fishing areas.
He stated this after a recent incident where 59 Ghanaian fishermen were victims of armed robbery at sea.
Dr Doke is a Security Lecturer at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
He urged the Fisheries Commission to take action. The commission is responsible for managing fishing activities.
The expert wants the commission to enforce sanctions against fishermen who break the rules about fishing zones.
Violating these zones could put fishermen at risk.
