Police in the Central Region have arrested a man in connection with the publication of a viral video alleging that members of the Ghana Police Service were supplying firearms to armed robbers. The arrest follows a formal complaint and investigations into the authenticity of the claims circulating on social media.
According to a police statement, the suspect was taken into custody after the video was widely shared and raised concerns about its potential to mislead the public and damage the reputation of officers carrying out official duties. The video purported to show police involvement in illicit arms distribution, a claim that the Ghana Police Service has publicly denied.
Authorities say the suspect was identified through investigative efforts by the Criminal Investigations Department in the region. He has been detained as part of an ongoing probe into the source of the video and its contents. Police have emphasised that no evidence supports the allegation that security personnel were supplying guns to robbers.
The accused is assisting with investigations. At this stage, the police have not publicly confirmed the specific charges pressed against him but have indicated that the matter relates to the dissemination of false information that could undermine public trust in state institutions. Officers involved in the investigation stressed that deliberate falsehoods about security agencies can constitute a serious offence under Ghana’s criminal law.
