The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 2,889 students who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination.
This decision was made because of suspected cheating during the exams. WAEC stated that the malpractice involved a significant number of candidates.
A total of 48 candidates had all their examination results cancelled. Another 119 candidates had their results for specific subjects withheld.
Additionally, 2,722 candidates from 229 schools are affected by the withholding of results.
WAEC did not provide specific details about the nature of the suspected malpractice in its announcement.
The council assured the public that it is committed to ensuring the integrity of its examinations.
Further investigations are expected to determine the next steps for the affected candidates and schools.
The withholding of these results impacts students who were hoping to use them for further education placement.
