The Central North Regional Police Command says it has arrested 100 people in connection with a violent attack at the Akoti Health Centre in Assin Wurakese, Central Region. The arrests are part of ongoing efforts to bring suspects linked to the incident before the courts.

According to the police, the arrests followed an incident at the health facility on January 11, 2026, when a group of individuals allegedly stormed the centre during treatment of an injured patient. The attack reportedly involved offensive weapons and caused panic among staff and patients. Health authorities have described the assault as an affront to the safety and neutrality expected at medical facilities.

Earlier reporting indicates the altercation began after a violent confrontation between a man identified as Yaw Buabeng and another individual, during which all sustained injuries. The first injured person was brought to the Akoti Health Centre for treatment, and shortly afterwards Buabeng was also taken there. Witness accounts say a mob later entered the facility and assaulted him again, prompting health workers and patients to flee in fear.

The police say the arrests in Assin Wurakese were made after intelligence identified persons believed to have taken part in or assisted with the attack. Among those detained in separate actions are residents of the town and surrounding communities. The force has not yet confirmed the names of those arrested or detailed the specific offences being investigated.

Authorities have said investigations remain ongoing, with the intention of identifying those directly responsible for the violence and prosecuting them under appropriate sections of the law. Officers have reiterated that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of competent jurisdiction.

The Ghana Health Service, through the Central Regional Health Directorate, condemned the attack and emphasised that health facilities must remain safe and neutral spaces dedicated to the preservation of life. It called on security agencies to take action to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors.

Earlier reports noted that a 20-year-old Community Police Assistant was among those arrested in a related incident for allegedly attacking a patient at the centre. That arrest came amid heightened concern over the breach of protocol and safety at the facility.

Police and regional health officials say they are working to improve security at health facilities in the area and to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents. The investigation into the Akoti Health Centre attack remains active and further arrests or charges may be forthcoming.
