A High Court in Accra has ruled that Wontumi must defend himself in the ongoing galamsey trial. The court dismissed his earlier submission that there was no case for him to answer.

The case involves allegations of illegal mining activities at the Samreboi concession. Wontumi is accused of playing a role in these activities.

The Judicial Service stated that the evidence presented was sufficient to proceed to the defence stage.

Wontumi's legal team had argued that the prosecution had not provided enough evidence to link him directly to the alleged galamsey operations.

However, the judge disagreed, finding that a prima facie case had been established.

The court has now adjourned the proceedings to allow Wontumi to begin presenting his defence.

Further dates will be set for the continuation of the trial.
