Kofi Tonto, who previously led information at Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, has denied allegations of fraud. He received a US$800 payment in July 2021.

Online reports suggested this payment was linked to a US$19 million fraud scheme at the Embassy.

Mr. Tonto issued a statement clarifying the nature of the payment.

He stated the US$800 was a legitimate child benefit payment.

The former official said he was aware of publications making false claims about the funds.

Ghana Police Service has not commented on Mr. Tonto's statement.

The alleged US$19 million fraud scheme at the Embassy is under investigation.

Further details regarding the investigation are awaited.
