Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has called for changes to Ghana's laws. He wants to be able to recover unexplained wealth even if no one is convicted of a crime.
Agyebeng believes this power should be part of Ghana's Constitution. This would strengthen the fight against corruption in the country.
Currently, offices like the Office of the Special Prosecutor and EOCO need to secure convictions. This is often required before they can recover assets gained through illegal means.
The Special Prosecutor stated that requiring convictions can slow down the process of taking back ill-gotten gains.
He believes that making non-conviction based asset recovery a constitutional provision will be a significant step forward.
This measure aims to make it easier for state institutions to retrieve money and property obtained through corrupt activities.
