The Economic and Organised Crime Office has successfully disrupted a syndicate responsible for an alleged five million Ghana Cedi fraud within the pension sector. According to a Citi Newsroom report, the investigative body detained five suspects following a surveillance operation targeting suspicious financial activity. The suspects reportedly manipulated the national pension database to facilitate illegal payments to non existent individuals.
A statement from the Economic and Organised Crime Office indicates that the group included officials who had access to sensitive digital records. Investigators claim the syndicate created ghost names to systematically withdraw large sums of money over a specified period. These findings were corroborated by a GhanaWeb report which stated that the arrests were part of a broader crackdown on public sector corruption.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office has not yet released the identities of all the suspects to the public. Officials informed Daily Graphic that the investigation is ongoing to determine if additional staff members at the pension agency assisted in the scheme. The agency stated that it is currently reviewing digital logs and bank statements linked to the arrested individuals.
Authorities intend to charge the suspects with money laundering and conspiracy to commit a crime. A spokesperson for the Economic and Organised Crime Office told Citi Newsroom that the state aims to recover the misappropriated funds through court orders. The suspects remain in custody while investigators prepare the formal case docket for the Attorney General department.
