Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Johnson Asiama has announced a clear strategy for banks to reduce bad loans. He expects non-performing loans to reach 10 percent by the end of 2026.

Dr Asiama noted that macroeconomic stability is key to a strong financial system. Banks were still dealing with the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme at the start of 2025. This program affected their financial strength.

Capital reserves were under pressure. The amount of loans that were not being repaid was high. This situation impacted the overall health of the banking sector.

The new roadmap aims to address these issues. It is designed to improve the stability and performance of Ghana's financial institutions.

The Bank of Ghana is focused on ensuring the banking sector can support the national economy effectively. This plan is a critical step towards that goal.
