The Eastern Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two male students in connection with an alleged gang rape that reportedly occurred in the region.
According to an official police statement, the arrests were made after a report was filed indicating that a female student had been sexually assaulted by multiple male students. The identities of the alleged victim and those arrested have not been publicly disclosed, in line with the sensitive nature of the case and protections afforded under Ghana’s laws regarding sexual offences involving students.
Police stated that the suspects were detained following preliminary investigations conducted by officers attached to the Eastern Regional Command. These arrests are part of ongoing efforts to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, collect crucial evidence, and identify any other individuals who may have been involved.
Gang rape is classified as a serious criminal offence under Ghanaian law, carrying significant custodial penalties upon conviction. A comprehensive investigation by the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is anticipated to determine key aspects of the case, including the gathering of witness statements, physical evidence, and any corroborative testimony.
Authorities have reiterated that all individuals arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty before a court of competent jurisdiction. The police have also urged members of the public and school communities to refrain from speculation and to allow the investigative processes to proceed without interference.
