Tensions over mining boundaries in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality surfaced on Wednesday morning resulting in the death of a 34 year old small scale miner. The victim was allegedly shot by members of a rival mining group during a confrontation over a disputed concession area. A report by 3News states the incident occurred while miners were working at the site within the Tarkwa jurisdiction.

Local authorities and the Ghana Police Service have reportedly launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. According to a Citi Newsroom report the identity of the deceased has been confirmed as a local miner while the suspects fled the scene immediately after the discharge of the firearm. Police personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain order and prevent further retaliatory attacks between the factions.

The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly has expressed concern over the recurring nature of mining boundary disputes in the region. An official statement from the Tarkwa Police Command indicates that officers are currently pursuing leads to apprehend the perpetrators who are believed to be hiding in neighbouring communities. The body of the deceased has been transported to a local morgue for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.

While the 3News report identifies the conflict as a direct result of overlapping claims on mineral rich land the Ghana Police Service has not yet released the names of any formal suspects currently in custody. Residents of the community have called for stricter enforcement of small scale mining regulations to prevent such violent encounters. The investigation remains ongoing as forensic teams examine the scene for evidence regarding the make and model of the weapon used in the alleged crime.
