The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of seven individuals suspected of involvement in a highway robbery that occurred on July 21, 2025, along the Tamale–Buipe Highway. The victim of the robbery was a member of the Council of State.

During a press briefing held on January 29, 2026, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the CID, stated that police achieved a significant breakthrough in the case through intelligence-led operations.

According to police reports, six armed men ambushed the victim on the highway, robbing him of personal belongings including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, and a laptop.

The suspects currently in custody have been identified as Rashida Yussif, Aaron Abana Baswi Fanga, Wilson Avasong, Muntaro Idrisu (also known as Virgin), Aminu Zebrilla (also known as Bedman), Inusa Sumaila (also known as Agenda), and Haruna Safiano.

The initial arrest took place on January 11, 2026, when Rashida Yussif was apprehended in Salaga, Savannah Region, in possession of a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims. The phone was seized and is being held as an exhibit.

Investigators subsequently tracked a series of transactions related to the stolen phone. This led to the arrest of Aaron Abana Baswi Fanga at a mobile phone shop in Dagomba Line, Salaga, where he was found with the device. Aaron informed police that his uncle, Wilson Avasong, had brought the phone to the shop. Wilson Avasong was later arrested in Tamale, claiming he purchased the phone from Muntaro Idrisu, a phone repairer, for GH¢1,000. Muntaro was then arrested at Aboabo Market in Tamale. Further inquiries led officers to Aminu Zebrilla, a motorbike rider, who admitted selling the phone to Muntaro for GH¢650.

A search of Zebrilla’s room yielded a locally manufactured shotgun, a locally manufactured pistol, live ammunition, a sword inscribed with “Bedman,” various mobile phones, dry leaves suspected to be narcotics, tools including a cutter and a catapult, a 'trotro' motorbike, and other items believed to be connected to the robbery.

Police also apprehended Inusa Sumaila and Haruna Safiano from a hideout located behind the Tamale China Mall. Investigators noted that Aminu Zebrilla is an ex-convict, having previously served time for robbery in 2012.
