The Ghana Police Service has deployed additional personnel to Bawku in the Upper East Region following a series of sporadic shooting incidents that resulted in two fatalities. According to a Citi Newsroom report, the violence erupted on Wednesday evening causing significant panic among residents in the township. Security forces have since intensified footprints in the area to maintain order.
Official reports from the Ghana Armed Forces and police units on the ground indicate that the security agencies are conducting 24-hour patrols. A Joy Online report stated that the fatalities occurred during active exchanges of gunfire in the township. Authorities have not yet identified the specific individuals responsible for the latest round of shootings which have plagued the area for several months.
The Upper East Regional Security Council is currently monitoring the situation to determine if further restrictive measures are necessary. According to a Daily Graphic report, the council has called for a ceasefire among the various factions to allow for a return to normalcy. The security agencies have also cautioned residents against carrying unauthorized weapons within the municipality.
Peace remains fragile in Bawku due to long-standing chieftaincy disputes. A GhanaWeb report confirmed that the Ghana Police Service has set up additional checkpoints on major roads leading in and out of the town. These locations are being used to conduct searches for arms and ammunition as part of the broader strategy to stabilize the volatile environment following the Wednesday night attacks.
