The National Chief Imam, Sheik Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has condemned the shooting incident that occurred at the Ho Central Mosque on Boxing Day, describing it as an affront to the sanctity of Islam, a threat to national security, and a departure from basic standards of civility.
In a press statement issued on Monday, December 29, 2025, the National Chief Imam addressed the tensions surrounding the incident and clarified the leadership structure of the Muslim community in the Volta Region. He stated that Sheik Ali Muniru is the legitimate Volta Regional Imam and that Sheik Anas serves as the Deputy Regional Imam.
The statement, which was signed on his behalf by his Personal Assistant, Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindo, explained that the selection of Sheik Muniru was not imposed on the community but was the result of consultation and mediation. The Chief Imam expressed concern that a matter he considered resolved had continued to fuel violence and unrest.
According to the statement, the disturbances, including the shooting at the mosque, are linked to a contest over the Volta Regional Imamship between Sheik Muniru and Sheik Anas. The National Chief Imam described both men as his children and said he expected solidarity, cordiality, and peaceful cooperation from them in the service of Allah and humanity.
He appealed to followers of both leaders to remain law abiding and peace loving, in accordance with the teachings of Islam. He also called on the Ghana Police Service to handle the matter impartially, warning that selective justice would amount to injustice. The Chief Imam further prayed for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries during the incident.
Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has issued a stern warning to individuals or groups whose actions threaten peace in the Zango community. Speaking to Graphic Online on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, Mr Gunu said the Regional Security Council would not tolerate any form of lawlessness or violence.
He stated that REGSEC had already met with both factions involved in the dispute and cautioned them against further acts of violence. Mr Gunu stressed that no one is above the law and that anyone who undermines public peace or takes the law into their own hands will face the full rigours of the law.
Authorities say investigations into the shooting incident are ongoing, while security measures remain in place to prevent further disturbances. Both religious and political leaders have urged calm as efforts continue to restore peace and stability in the community.
